Why Web & Digital Design?

If computers, video games and animation spark your imagination, the Web & Digital Design Career Pathway will teach you how to turn these interests into a successful career. Web & Digital Design involves creating, designing and producing digitally-generated or computer-enhanced media used in business, training, entertainment, communications and marketing. Students will get started by creating web pages, transforming text documents, pictures, colors and layouts using HTML, Dreamweaver and more.

Occupations range from web designers, webmasters, 3D animators and virtual reality specialists to multimedia producers and graphic artists. Because organizations of all types and sizes use digital media (the Internet, CD-ROM, DVD, etc.) to communicate with customers and collaborate on ideas, interactive media experts can find employment opportunities in a variety of settings.

There are numerous animation artist opportunities in video games, manufacturing, architectural walk throughs, medical visualizations, corporate presentations, advertising, interactive media and training. The motion picture and video industry are also excellent for multimedia artists and animators, film and video editors and others expert in digital filming and computer-generated imaging. And for those who love the web, digital designers with website design and animation backgrounds will have numerous career opportunities as well.

The International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (IBCP) is an innovative education framework incorporating the vision and educational principles of the IB into a unique programme specifically tailored for students who wish to engage in career-related learning. The aim of the IBCP is to provide students with both an academic and practical foundation to support both their further studies and specialized training, thereby ensuring their success in the workforce. The IBCP combines highly regarded and internationally recognized IB Diploma Programme courses with an approved career-related study and a unique IBCP core. Web & Digital Design is one of eleven MHS Career Pathways that has been approved for the IBCP.

Web & Digital Design Course Schedule

Intro to Digital Technology (IDT) – 2 semesters.
In this course, high school students can acquire a fundamental understanding of the operation of computers and computer networks and create useful programs implementing simple algorithms. By exploring Web pages that include images, sound, and text, they can acquire a working understanding of the Internet, common formats for data transmission, and some insights into the design of the human-computer interface. Emphasis is placed on developing proficient fundamental understanding of the operation of computers and computer networks and creates useful programs implementing simple algorithms. By developing Web pages that include images, sound, and text, they can acquire a working understanding of the Internet, common formats for data transmission, and some insights into the design of the human-computer interface. This course is the prerequisite for advanced courses in Web & Digital Communication and Programming Pathways.

Digital Design – 2 semesters.
Prerequisites: (Computing in the Modern World or Introduction to Digital Technology)
Using web design as the platform for production design and presentation, students will create and learn digital media applications using elements of text, graphics, animation, sound, video and digital imaging for various format. The digital media and interactive media projects developed and published showcase the student skills and ability. Emphasis will be placed on effective use of tools for interactive multimedia production including storyboarding, visual development, project management, digital citizenship, and web processes. Students will create and design web sites that incorporate digital medial elements to enhance content of web site

Web Design – 2 semesters.
Final course in the Web & Digital Design Pathway to be offered beginning 2015-2016
Prerequisite: Digital Design
Taking this course will equip students with the ability to plan, design, and create a web site. Students will move past learning how to write code and progress to designing a professional looking web site using graphical authoring tools that contains multimedia elements. Working individually and in team’s students will learn to work with web page layout and graphical elements to create a professional looking web site.
Various forms of technologies will be used to expose students to resources, software, and applications of web design. Professional communication skills and practices, problem-solving, ethical and legal issues, and the impact of effective presentation skills are enhanced in this course to prepare students to be college and career ready. After mastery of the standards in this course, students should be prepared to take the end of pathway assessment in this career area.

Intro to Animation & 3D Graphics – 2 semesters.
Prerequisite: (Computing in the Modern World or Intro to Digital Technology)
Introduction to Animation and 3d Design is a foundations course to the animation and 3d design industry. Emphasis is placed on career awareness, fundamentals of modeling, storyboard creation, cameras and lighting. Students will learn how 3d technology is used for film, broadcast and games and how it is rapidly becoming the medium of choice for industrial design, military simulations, and medical visualization. The standards are aligned with the interactive media standards in Georgia’s technical colleges, thus helping to qualify students for advanced placement should they continue their education at the postsecondary level.
This course is the fourth course in the Web & Digital Communications Pathway; the course is recommended but is not required for pathway completion.
